Newstead Abbey
Newstead Abbey
Originally an Augustinian priory founded in 1170 it was converted into a residence in 1539; its claim to fame is that it was the former home of the famous romantic poet Lord Byron who wrote of it as, Gothic babel of a thousand years.
The Abbey is now a picturesque ruin attached to an impressive Victorian house set in landscaped gardens with a memorial to his dog visitors can also see his living quarters and study along with and other memorabilia from his days at Cambridge.
The great drawing room is particularly fine, in the west gallery the bedrooms are named after English kings, the building is owned by Nottingham council.
