This lovely mellow stoned Dorset town is surrounded by valleys and green wooded hills it is a great destination for a pleasant day out.

This picturesque town is famed for its abbey and the home of one of England’s finest public schools. It was also home to one of England’s greatest men the Elizabethan explorer and adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh, for the Thomas Hardy fans Sherborne is also the fictitious Sherton Abbas in his novel the woodlanders.

Before visiting the nearby castles, you can browse the shops or eat in one of the many fine cafes. The town has an award winning tourist information centre and is must first stop where you can obtain brochures and maps to help you get the most out of your visit to the town and surrounding areas.

The town has many interesting buildings which can be seen on the town trail a map of which can also be obtained from the Tourist information centre in Digby Road right near the Abbey.

After browsing the shops take in the magnificent abbey it is full of interesting history the ceilings fan vaulting is magnificent: Simon Jenkins in his book England’s thousand best church said, “I would pit Sherborne’s roof against any contemporary work of the Italian renaissance".

After visiting the abbey why not explore not only one but two castles recently Sir Walter Raleigh’s castle has been used as a film location for the BBC's acclaimed Tudor historical drama Wolf Hall based on the books by Hilary Mantel. It is full of fine furniture paintings and other historical items, the gardens were laid out by capability brown and there are pleasant lakeside walks. The first castle is a picturesque ruin that overlooks the newer building.

The town has plenty of reasonably priced car parks all within walking distance of the town.
