Cathedral and castle


Durham this medieval treasure is a world heritage site and no wonder with its castle and cathedral set atop a hill in an absolutely stunning setting overlooking the river Wear.

The University city of Durham is one of the most visually attractive and beautiful cities to visit.

The history buff will find no shortage of interesting places, for the more religious Durham is the resting place of the venerable Bede and St Cuthbert, and has a wealth of religious history to explore.

Durham is best explored on foot with its marketplace the many Georgian houses and Castle, a visit here will ensure a full and interesting day. There are many walking tours and great views just around the cathedral itself.

A visit to the Castle and Cathedral are obviously top of the list the interior of the Cathedral has magnificent huge ornate Norman columns patterned with geometric Anglo Saxon and Moorish designs holding-up the roof, the result is magnificent.

The extraordinary Galilee Chapel, which contains Bede’s tomb and the nearby choir containing St Cuthbert’s tomb, are some of the many things to see in this beautiful building.Be sure to check out the sanctuary door knocker which fugitives would sound to be given sanctuary also the superb rose window.
