Helmsley

The market town of Helmsley is famous for its picturesque position on the edge of the North York’s moors and its imposing castle. Now a ruin, in its time the castle was impregnable but in the civil war after a three month siege it surrendered to Sir Thomas Fairfax and it suffered the same fate as numerous other royalist strongholds and was slighted.

Sitting on the Hambleton hills in a crook of the river Rye the town clusters around a pretty market square and fine houses that back onto the river. The town was a centre for weaving in the 17th century and was renowned for its lively fairs and lively town folk.

These days it is a centre for walking as it is ideally placed for those wanting to explore the North York’s Moors National Park.
Nearby are the romantic ruins of Rievaulx Abbey set in a dramatic and picturesque setting surrounded by woods and a river.

Further afield there are some fine houses such as Dunscomb Hall and Nunnington Hall as well as Castle Howard; this was used to film the TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited.

For the harry potter fans Goathland station was Hogwarts station, the North York’s Moor railway stops here. This little town was also featured in the Hit TV series heartbeat.
