The town of Caernarfon sits between the Menai straits and Snowdonia and as such occupied a strategic position. The town is totally dominated by King Edward I incredible castle, the multi-coloured 9 feet thick walls were modeled on those of Constantinople.

The castles and walls encompass the old town, which is full of tiny maze like streets, merging into the modern town and market place. The castle and walls are part of the UNESCO world heritage site of, Edwards’s castles and walls in Gwynedd.

Edward II was born in the castle and was made the first English prince of wales there in 1301, seven centuries later prince Charles was invested here as the Prince of Wales. The queen’s tower is the museum of the Royal Welsh fusiliers it is named after Queen Eleanor wife of Edward I.

The town of Caernarfon is fiercely proud of its welsh heritage the town has the highest percentage of welsh speaker’s than any other place in wales. There are good views of the castle from across the river.
