The town grew up around the Celtic monastery established here in 525 AD by St Deiniol the first Bishop of north wales, this eventually became the cathedral. The present day structure is the work of Sir George Gilbert Scott.

Bangor today is a quiet university town; there are some interesting sights such the town hall a fine Tudor building as well as the bishops garden. Recently The Pontio arts centre a multimillion-pound arts project opened in the town centre, facilities include theatres, cafes cinemas as well as space for exhibitions and other areas especially for the students.

Bangor is a useful base for exploring Snowdonia Anglesey and the North Wales coast.
