Peebles

Only 23 miles from Edinburgh the handsome town of Peebles is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Sitting astride the river tweed and surrounded by wooded hills the place is very picturesque.

Peebles has some fine connections as well as some fine countryside, the writers Robert Louis Stevenson and John Buchan both spent time here, in the high street, there is a museum to John Buchan. The town was also the birthplace of William and Robert chambers of encyclopaedia fame.

Peebles position in some lovely countryside makes it ideal for walking and cycling and it is a popular destination. The river tweed is one of Scotland’s most famous rivers for salmon fishing and the town’s motto reflects this.

The high street has a good selection of independent shops and places to eat, nearby is Neidpath castle its walls are over 11ft thick the tower of which can still be seen, the word peeble is believed to be derived from the Celtic word pebyll meaning tent, and some believe nomadic people settled here.
