The town of Pitlochry is a bustling long street set in a wooded valley of the river Tummel, this main street is lined with shops cafes and restaurants in season gets it very busy.

The towns jewel is the river in the evening you walk along the banks and see salmon swimming; Pitlochry is the geographical centre of Scotland general wade built a military road through here.

The explorer’s garden can be reached across the footbridge and is worth a visit the garden documents 300 years of plant collecting by Scottish explorers and botanists, on the bridge look out for the salmon ladder.

If you like whisky the Edradour distillery reputedly, Scotland’s smallest can be visited it lies just outside the town.

Nearby is Blair Atholl castle a huge white painted mansion where Bonnie prince Charlie once slept the place is full of interesting artifacts and is the home of the Dukes and earls of Atholl for more than 700 years.

The town of Pitlochry is a good place to break up a journey northwards and a great place for a base to explore central Scotland.
