Slad

The village of Slad in Gloucester as literary buffs will know was the home of the author Laurie lee and the setting for his bestselling book cider with Rosie. The Book beautifully describes his childhood years and growing up in the lovely Slad valley.

The village clings to the side of the valley with the houses cascading down the slope; Lee’s old house now called Rosebank is still there as is the church and local pub the woolpack inn. The schoolhouse is now a private residence.

Laurie lee also wrote novels about his journeys in particular to civil war Spain, he is buried in the church of Holy Trinity overlooking the valley he loved; inside the church, there is a memorial window to him.

The woolpack inn which is opposite the church is a wonderful old country pub, call in for a pint as there is some memorabilia to the man on the walls. The pub also serves excellent food and gets busy at weekends.
