Gloucester


The city of Gloucester is renowned for its cathedral perhaps one of the most beautiful in England, the town lies on the river Severn and is close to the welsh border, it is the county town of Gloucestershire.

It was this location that led to the Romans founding a town and port here in AD 97 calling it Colonia Glevum Nervensis. The name Gloucester is probably derived from the Saxon ceaster for fort and the roman Glev it became part of the kingdom of Wessex and then Mercia.

In medieval times, Gloucester grew rich on the Cotswold's wool trade and also as a port with its own fishing fleet.

The city docks are great to visit there you can see ships in a Victorian docks setting, there are plenty of bars cafes and also the Quays designer outlet, along with some great museums. Beatrix potter fans can see the tailor of Gloucester’s shop; Gloucester is a lively city with all year round events.

The main part of the magnificent Norman cathedral was completed between 1089 – 1260, Harry Potter fans can explore the cathedral cloisters which were used as a location for the films the fan vaulting there has been called the finest example in England.

In medieval times, this lovely building was a centre for pilgrimage when people came to see the grave of Edward II, who was murdered in nearby Berkeley castle.

Gloucester is a good base for exploring the Cotswolds or wales.
